How To Care For Your Veneers‍

July 27, 2022

Interested in getting veneers? Then you are just a few appointments away from getting the smile you’ve always wanted!

Veneers are a type of cosmetic dentistry that involves attaching a prosthetic to the natural sugarcane of your teeth. Through this procedure, patients can get dramatically improved smiles that can last a lifetime.

However, veneers aren't completely damage-proof, and it’s important to take proper care of your oral health at all times to extend their lifespan as much as possible.

Here are 5 tips on how to properly care for your veneers:

1. Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Veneers don’t mean you can relax when it comes to dental care. The prosthetic gets attached to the front layer of your natural teeth, which means that risks such as cavities or gum disease are very much still present.

Through good oral hygiene, you will keep your dental health in top condition, and help extend the lifespan of your veneers! The best part is that you don’t need to do anything different - just brush your teeth and veneers 2 times a day and floss at least once.

2. Avoid Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding can eventually lead to veneers cracking or even breaking, not to mention the fact that it can have the same effect on your natural teeth!

If you can, avoid grinding your teeth as much as possible, or get the appropriate treatment to ensure this habit stops and doesn’t damage your oral health. Depending on the cause, teeth grinding can be addressed in several ways:

  • Wearing mouthguards
  • Stress-reduction
  • Medications
  • Therapy, etc.

3. Avoid Chewing On Things That Can Chip Your Veneers

Speaking of habits that can chip or break your veneers, if you’re known to idly chew on hard objects like a pen cap, you should try your best to kick this habit. Over time, chewing on such hard objects can damage your veneers, and you will need to get them fixed or even replaced.

4. Avoid Staining Foods And Drinks

Veneers can’t be stained easily, but consuming high amongst of certain foods and beverages can eventually lead to a change in their appearance:

  • Foods or drinks with coloring
  • Blueberries
  • Citruses
  • Energy drinks and sodas
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Tomatoes
  • Pasta sauces, etc.

You don’t need to eliminate all of them from your diet, just be mindful of how much you consume them, and be sure to clean your teeth soon after to reduce the risk of staining!

5. Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Apart from at-home care, the best way to make sure your veneers last a long time is to keep seeing the dentist routinely. Preventative care is the backbone of oral health, and it can help keep your natural teeth and your veneers in top condition.
