What Are Dentures?
Dentures are removable dental appliances designed to replace missing teeth and gum tissue. Dentures can be made from various acrylic and composite materials and are held in place with suction, dental adhesive, or a metal framework that clips into your remaining healthy teeth. At Lakewood Dental Studio,
Dr. Leisa Robotham
recommends dentures as a convenient, affordable way to restore your grin.
Dentures are much more common than one might think, and nearly 1 in 5 people wear dentures (based on a study across 19 countries).
The first step to your perfect dentures is an all-inclusive checkup with Dr. Robotham. She uses the latest technology and diagnostic tools available to take detailed impressions of your mouth and detect any signs or symptoms that may be present such as gum disease, tooth decay, or even oral cancer. If anything else needs attention before creating dentures, we will take care of it beforehand.
After your comprehensive exam, take a few moments to chat with Dr. Robotham about the dental goals you want to achieve. Our Dallas dentist will create an individualized plan explicitly customized just for you! This specially crafted treatment schedule can guide you to perfect your smile.
Whether you're suffering from an unfortunate loose tooth or some beyond saving, Dr. Robotham can help! Our team provides expert care when you need a dental extraction. Let us support you on the road back toward a healthier mouth and smile.
Before creating a perfect new smile in our off-site dental laboratory, we'll make impressions of your unique grin and send them for fabrication. When they return from the laboratory, we'll fit them to ensure you have maximum comfort with your dentures and can start smiling confidently.
Are your dentures not fitting quite like they used to? We're here for you! Visit us, and we'll make sure everything is back in order with a quick relining or replacement process.
Your dentist will clean and numb your mouth, and then begin to trim away a thin layer of enamel from the two teeth next to your missing tooth. These are known as “abutment teeth” and they will hold your crowns. Your bridge will permanently attach to these crowns.
Once your abutment teeth have been prepared, your dentist will use dental putty and trays to take impressions of your teeth. These impressions will be used by a technician at a dental lab to build your dental bridge.
Depending on your needs, your dentist will place a temporary resin bridge to protect your prepared abutment teeth, or two temporary dental crowns. Either way, your prepared teeth will be covered and protected until your permanent bridge can be placed.
Once your permanent bridge is ready, usually within a few weeks, you’ll come into the office to have the bridge checked for proper fit. Minor adjustments may be made by your dentist, if necessary, to ensure that your bridge looks and feels natural. If the bridge requires larger adjustments, it will be sent back to the lab for further refinement.
Once you and your dentist have determined that the fit of your bridge feels right, they will use powerful dental cement to attach it permanently to your abutment teeth, restoring your smile and your bite.
PARTIAL DENTURES
Partial dentures can be a solution for patients missing one or several of their natural teeth.
FULL DENTURES
Complete dentures are used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth.
Dentures can help faces look younger. Aside from creating a fuller smile, dentures can help give virtually full support to your cheeks and lips (and prevent sagging).
THINK YOU MAY NEED A DENTAL CROWN?
Are you wearing dentures all night? Think again! Keeping your denture in while you sleep can do more harm than good. Not only is plaque accumulation likely, but the long-term effects include an increased risk of gum disease, oral thrush, and bone loss. Yikes! Remove and clean those pearly whites before turning off the lights for a better tomorrow.
Dentures and denture partials are designed to stay securely in place, allowing you to talk, chew, and smile with confidence. Complete dentures use suction and denture adhesive along the gum line for a secure fit. Denture partials use metal clasps or precision attachments that latch onto pre-existing teeth. This mechanism helps minimize the movement of dentures while eating and speaking and reduces the amount of denture adhesive required.
Dentures can last for 5 to 7 years with proper care.
